Nationwide Polytechnic Strike Will Continue - ASUP

The National Executive Council of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has insisted that the two month old nationwide strike would continue.

The union took the decision through a voice vote at the end of its 74th NEC meeting held at Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra State, the body said it remains committed to the development of the education sector and insisted on the continuation of the ongoing industrial action until the Federal Government fulfill its own part of the bargain.

ASUP blamed the Federal Government for the closure of polytechnics nationwide, saying the government should honour the agreement signed by both parties in 2010.

Man Rapes Unilag Student, Post Her Nude Photos On The Internet

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 22-year-old man, Babajide Bashorun, for allegedly kidnapping a female undergraduate of the University of Lagos, Akoka, and raping her.

The police said Bashorun, a dog breeder, did not only rape his victim, he also took snapshot of her nudity, which he allegedly posted on the Internet. A family source said, “Few days later, the pictures were all over the Internet.

The picture had the name and surname of the girl, her university, age, department and course of study. People were stopping her on the campus to tell her they had seen her nude pictures on the Internet. “The girl’s relations later saw the pictures and urged her parents to report the mater at Adeniji Adele Police Division.” Policemen from the station subsequently arrested Bashorun.

 A senior officer from the station, who pleaded anonymity, told our correspondent that the police were still on the trail of two undergraduates of UNILAG. The duo, identified as Mayowa and Ademuyiwa, both 400 level Architecture students, were accused by the police of complicity in the crime. Detectives from Adeniji Adele Police Station are working on the theory that the pictures were leaked to the Internet through the duo of Mayowa and Ademuyiwa.

Bashorun had said he only sent the snapshots of the girl to Mayowa, who in turn sent them to Ademuyiwa. The dog breeder, who denied beating his victim, said they had been dating for long and he had spent a lot of money on her. He said, “She is my girlfriend. I wanted to buy ipad for her. I was able to raise about N70,000. She came to my house to collect the money on that day. “We had argument and I used floor mop to hit her on her back. I now took her pictures.

 I sent the pictures to my friend, but I didn’t tell him to post the pictures on internet.” The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ngozi Braide, confirmed the arrest of Bashorun. She said, “We charged him to court yesterday (Tuesday) . We are still looking for his accomplices who are on the run”

Bad Role Models: Tonto Dikeh and Stella Damasus Dropped As Red Cross Brand Ambassadors

Recently, veteran actors; Olu Jacobs, Alex Usifo Omiagbo, Joke Silva, Tonto Dikeh, Stella Damasus, and music stars; 2Face Idibia, P-Sqaure, Davido, 9ice, Banky W, Naeto C, Ali Baba Don Jazzy, Julius Agwu, AY among others were honoured with a Red Cross Society of Nigeria, ambassadorship deal.

Some Nollywood names have been screened out now and they include Stella Damascus and Tonto Dikeh.

According to reports, the duo didn’t meet the scrutiny standard of a Red Cross ambassador. The duo did not pass the health and personality exercise arraigned by the Society.

Tonto asides her heavy tattoos also had personality problems, especially the excess use of tobacco. While Stella was screened out from the race because of a recent marriage scandal between fellow actress Doris Simeon’s husband and her.

According to the Red Cross, personality reputation was necessary and such would not be welcomed by the Society.

52 Young Nigerians Arrested In Malaysia (See Photo)

Not fewer than 52 Nigerians were arrested last Sunday 23rd June during a midnight house to house raiding by Malaysian immigration.

They raided all houses occupied by Nigerians, they destroyed doors and arrested both unclothed residents.... Some guys were not at home at the time of the raiding, but their doors were also destroyed and left open till now.

The reasons for the arrest is sketchy as at the time of publishing this report.

They are now awaiting deportation.

Foreign Students Must Pass SSCE Before NYSC Mobilisation

Nigerian students who study in foreign universities must possess the minimum qualification of five credits including Mathematics and English Language before they are mobilised for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.

Minister of Education Professor Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufa’i said this yesterday when the Director-General of NYSC, Nnamdi Okorie-Affia, paid a visit to the Federal Ministry of Education to seek clarification on modalities for mobilising foreign graduates for the one-year scheme. 

 

Recently, there have been reports of Nigerian students who failed to obtain five credits in the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) going abroad to study in foreign institutions and returning upon completion of their programmes, to seek mobilisation for the NYSC.

 

The minister said although the federal government was not opposed to any Nigerian seeking foreign training, such candidates must obtain the basic qualification of five credits including Mathematics and English Language before they can be certified by the Federal Ministry of Education and cleared for NYSC.

Chelsea 'agree £49.3m deal for Cavani

Napoli's official radio station Radio Marte has claimed a £49.3m deal had been struck with Chelsea for striker Edinson Cavani.
In a statement late on Monday evening Radio Marte announced: 'We have received news in the office from a very reliable source that Napoli have sealed a deal with Chelsea for Cavani's sale.

'Rafa Benitez also gave the all-clear, but before making the move official Napoli want to secure the striker who will replace Il Matador.
Aurelio de Laurentiis' club will pick up around €58m, a slight discount on the buy-out clause, which is the same situation as Ezequiel Lavezzi to PSG last year. 'The player will earn €8.5m per season plus image rights.'

The news broke as Cavani announced he wanted face to face talks with president De Laurentiis and reports that Manchester United were considering entering the race.
The Uruguay striker and his father have indicated that their preference would be to move to Real Madrid. The Spanish club have contacted Napoli but will now have to better Chelsea's offer should it be confirmed.

Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in signing the 26-year-old who was top scorer in Serie A last season with 29 goals.
The colourful De Laurentiis was quoted in the Italian media saying 'I'll smack him' if a conclusion over Cavani was not reached by July 20.

Chelsea have shown a reluctance to bid near the asking price for Cavani and have so far offered players plus cash. Cavani's agent, Claudio Anellucci, cast doubt on the report saying: 'There is nothing closed with Chelsea.'
