Nigerian
students who study in foreign universities must possess the minimum
qualification of five credits including Mathematics and English Language
before they are mobilised for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)
scheme.
Minister of Education Professor Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufa’i said
this yesterday when the Director-General of NYSC, Nnamdi Okorie-Affia,
paid a visit to the Federal Ministry of Education to seek clarification
on modalities for mobilising foreign graduates for the one-year scheme.
Recently, there have been reports of Nigerian students who failed to
obtain five credits in the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE)
going abroad to study in foreign institutions and returning upon
completion of their programmes, to seek mobilisation for the NYSC.
The
minister said although the federal government was not opposed to any
Nigerian seeking foreign training, such candidates must obtain the basic
qualification of five credits including Mathematics and English
Language before they can be certified by the Federal Ministry of
Education and cleared for NYSC.
