Atletico Madrid won their 10th Spanish Cup when they beat bitter city
rivals Real Madrid 2-1 in extra-time in a match which saw both Jose
Mourinho and Cristiano Ronaldo sent off.
Real had been unbeaten in
the previous 25 meetings between the two sides dating back 14 years and
Mourinho's men on Friday got off to the perfect start when Ronaldo
headed in Luka Modric's corner.
However, Diego Costa levelled for
Atletico 10 minutes before half-time and Los Rojiblancos rode their luck
as Mesut Ozil, Karim Benzema and Ronaldo all hit the post for Real.
Mourinho,
expected to be back in charge at Chelsea next season, was then sent
from the touchline 13 minutes from the end of normal time before Miranda
headed Atletico in front eight minutes into extra time.
Real Madrid's coach Jose Mourinho (2nd L) argues with referee Clos Gomez (R) before being sent off, on May 17, 2013
There was
even more drama to come as Ronaldo was shown a straight red card for
reacting angrily to a late challenge from Gabi with six minutes
remaining.
"We had two clear chances on goal, we hit the post three times -- this is why I think it is unfair," said Mourinho.
But Gabim who was also sent off, insisted his side were worthy winners.
"This team has worked hard, to be here with the fans," Gabi told TVE.
"We deserve it, this victory is for them, for those people that have waited 14 years to see Atletico beat Madrid."
Real captain Sergio Ramos was left to rue their missed chances throughout the 120 minutes.
"After the first goal we maybe relaxed and they pushed us back," he said.
"We
have four or five clear chances and when you don't take them, then you
regret it. It is clear that this is the reality and we have to accept
it."
Mourinho, who could well have sat on the Real bench for the
last time as he is now likely to receive a four-game touchline ban,
continued to controversially freeze out Pepe after his outspoken
comments against the coach.
Raul Albiol was preferred alongside Ramos in central defence.
However,
buoyed by the confidence that they had won all eight derbies during
Mourinho's reign, Real took just 13 minutes to make the breakthrough as
Ronaldo was given far too much room by Diego Godin and Radamel Falcao to
register his 55th goal of the season with a precise header.
Gabi
responded for Atletico with their first shot on goal moments later that
flew over the bar, but despite enjoying a decent spell of possession,
Diego Simeone's men were finding it difficult to create a clear-cut
opening.
However, when it did arrive on 35 minutes they took full
advantage. Falcao called Mourinho's decision to field Albiol into
question as he turned the Spanish international and released Costa to
fire in his eighth goal in the competition with a low drive past Diego
Lopez.
The equaliser sparked Real into life in the final throws of
the opening half as Modric drilled a low shot just wide from the edge
of the area before Ozil struck the inside of the post with a
half-volley.
Real ought to have been back in front on the hour
mark as Ronaldo burst down the left and his cut back was fired against
the post by Benzema.
Real then struck the post for the third time as a Ronaldo free-kick came back off the upright.
Mourinho was then sent from the touchline for protesting after a number of marginal decisions went against his side.
Atletico had the first chance in extra-time as Costa was released clean through on goal, but his effort was too close to Lopez.
From
the resulting corner they did take their chance as Koke's second
attempt at a cross from the right was flicked in at the near post by
Miranda.
Atletico's task in the final minutes was made easier when Ronaldo kicked out at Gabi and saw a straight red card.
Gabi was also sent off but Simeone's team held on to seal their third trophy in little over a year.
The Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko and a one time Deputy Governor, senator and governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party
(PDP) in the state of Osun, Sen. Iyiola Omisore are believed to have held a
secret meeting at the weekend in the state capital Osogbo, the state capital. Both Mimiko
and Omisore who are said to be age-long friends reportedly met at the
residence of a chieftain of the PDP in Osogbo before they both attended a
dinner organized by the Lion’s Club, district 404 in Osogbo.
The two friends met privately with some other chieftains of
the PDP in the state later appeared at the GMT Hotel, venue of the
dinner, where an award was also conferred on Omisore by the club.
According to reliable
sources, the meeting may not be unconnected with next year’s governorship election
in the state, as Omisore has started mobilizing support for the
realization of his long nursed dream of becoming the governor of the
state. Omisore is believed to be the leading aspirant among the
contestants in the PDP for the state governorship ticket. Other
aspirants seeking the governorship position on the platform of the PDP
are Sen. Olasunkanmi Akinlabi, Alhaji Fatai Akinbade and Hon. Oluwole
Oke.
Sources close to the PDP in the state informed that Mimiko is one of
the strong supporters of Omisore and he’s working round the clock to
ensure that Omisore succeeds the incumbent Governor, Rauf Aregbesola.
The relationship between Aregbesola and Mimiko became frosty shortly
after the latter was declared Governor of Ondo state by the Court of
Appeal and failed to pitch tent with Aregbesola’s political party, the
Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).
Other dignitaries present at the event in honor of Omisore were the
Senate President, Dr. David Mark who was represented by Sen. Mujitaba
Mohammed, representative of the Kwara state governor, state chairman of
the PDP, Alhaji Ganiyu Olaoluwa, former Speaker of the state House of
Assembly, Hon. Adejare Bello, among other notable politicians across the
country.

Chelsea fans at Europa League Final in Amsterdam
View gallery
A huge army of 20,000 Chelsea fans descended on Amsterdam today to
see if their heroes can make history in the Europa League final.
The
Londoners go into their showdown against Benfica at the 48,000-seater
Amsterdam Arena knowing victory would make them the first English team
to win the three Euro titles - Champions League, Cup Winners' Cup and
Europa League.
Only 9,800 fans have been able to get their hands on the official Chelsea allocation for the match.
But up to 10,000 more fans travelled without tickets to enjoy the build up, turning squares, bars and cafes into a sea of blue.
Chelsea
Supporters' Trust claimed ticketing for the match was "ridiculous" and
"shocking" after their route to the final included far-flung trips to
Ukraine, Russia and Romania.
Crocked club captain John Terry is
expected to lift the trophy again if they win - just as he did after
last year's dramatic penalty shoot-out victory over Bayern Munich in the
Champions League final - even if he does not play.
Father and son
Stuart and Dean Bryant made an 18-hour journey from Bude in Cornwall by
bus, train and overnight coach to reach the Dutch capital at 10am
today.

Builder Stuart, 50, who managed to get two tickets for the game for
150 Euros (£128) from a tout, said: "It has been a long journey to get
here but it is worth it.
"I have been to the cash point and forked
out for tickets but we are very happy just to get in to see the match.
We had expected to come and just enjoy the atmosphere.
"I don't
agree with John Terry lifting the trophy again, it is a disgrace really.
They should have just let Frank Lampard do it this time around.
"I
did not think he should have got the Champions League trophy because he
almost blew it for us in Barcelona when he got sent off.
"He is unfortunate in that he is injured this time - but I don't honestly know why he is getting it."
He added: "I don't think making history with three trophies is the Holy Grail, but we will take that tonight."
Dean,
27, a house husband and dad-of-five, added: "We have done this for
about £300 each which is brilliant really. It has taken a fair bit of
research over the past few weeks, but it is great to be here."
Danish fans Rasmus Enevoldsen, 25, and Emil Tuxen, 27, made a 15-hour road trip to get to Amsterdam.
Originally
from the town of Middlefart in Denmark - the name has seen it featured
on the TV show "Jackass" - they bought tickets from two Fenerbache fans
after their team failed to make the final.
Category One £130
tickets were changing hands for anything up to 700 Euros, and Rasmus
said: "It is a long way to come but for us it was a great chance to see
the team. We are very lucky to get in to see the game.
"I have
supported them since I played Fifa 99 as a kid, that's how it all
started. I have got a bet on a 2-0 win and if that comes in it will pay
for the trip."
Police officer Emil added: "It was a very long
drive, but it is difficult for us to get to Stamford Bridge, and that is
very expensive. This has cost us about £350, which is not bad."

Student Jani Tavcar, 20, travelled 15 hours from Slovenia by car
with six of his pals - and has not even got a ticket. He joked: "I have
been to Prague, Munich, now Amsterdam to see Chelsea, we will just watch
the match in a pub and enjoy the atmosphere.
"There was a crash on the Autobahn in Germany so we had to wait two hours to get through the traffic.
"But
we are confident, despite the injuries. I think the trophy should go to
Lampard, not Terry, it is stupid giving it to him again when he is not
even playing."
Mike Neat, 49, from Ealing is now living in New
York flew in just for the game. He said: "I went to Munich and I
wouldn't miss this for the world.
"Despite living in New York this is my 16th game of the season. I flew in on Tuesday and going back at the weekend.
"It's a good job my wife is understanding."
Mike was joined by five other member of New York Blues. Orlin Mirtchev flew in from San Francisco for the match.
He is spending just 24 hours in Amsterdam before flying back.
Ticketing
for the final has caused dismay among Chelsea fans. A proportion of the
club's allocation were offered to club staff, priced from £39-117, with
official gold and platinum packages starting at €690 (£580).
Chelsea
Supporters' Trust said in a statement: "As many as 30,000 Chelsea
supporters could make the trip to Amsterdam regardless of whether they
have tickets, and we fear many will feel compelled to deal with ticket
touts.
"This means that cash-strapped supporters who have already
paid significant amounts of money this season following the team from
Newcastle to Japan may well end up paying hundreds if not thousands of
pounds for a ticket.
"These occasions seem to be seen not as
occasions for the normal supporter, but a celebration for the higher
echelons of football and the wealthy, some of whom will sell their
tickets on to people who actually want to go to the game, just to make a
quick profit.
"Furthermore, the large corporate and neutral
presence in Amsterdam will take the edge off the atmosphere of what will
be Chelsea's second European final in as many years."
UEFA
stressed they wanted to make the occasion as accessible to "the general
public" as possible. They said: "In line with UEFA's policy to promote
the competition among the general public, a total of 38,000 tickets,
representing 79% of the net stadium capacity of 48,000, will go to the
supporters of the two finalist teams and to neutral fans.
"Out of
this allocation, the two finalist teams will receive a total around
20,000 tickets - 10,000 each - for distribution among their supporters. A
significant allocation - 30% of these tickets - has been made available
in category four, ensuring as many people as possible can afford to
go."
Amsterdam Police have 600 officers on duty in the city centre for the build-up to the game.
They
can call on riot cops and specialist "detention units" in the event of
any trouble, and are using specially-trained spotters and additional
CCTV to track crowds.
The match saw 31 charter flights, 19 from
Portugal and 12 from England, carrying thousands of fans into the city's
Schipol Airport.
Former Lagos State Governor Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu's daughter Abibat
Tinubu recently graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston,
Massachusetts, United States. Bola Tinubu, wife and daughter where there
to celebrate with Abibat.
Senators who are members of the PDP caucus who met this afternoon threw their full
weight in support of the declaration of state of emergency in three
states of the north: Yobe, Nasarawa and Borno respectively.
Our findings also gathered from a source within that the President of
the Senate is to meet with President Goodluck Jonathan much later
tonight over the decision reached by the PDP lawmakers.
